Have you ever looked at a stylist on a shoot and seen the obscene amounts of bags they’re lugging around thought “what the hell could you need all of that for?” Well my name is Lexi, I’m a stylist and I’m about to tell you why!
Stylist’s will often have what’s called a “kit” with them, which houses all of their essentials they take from shoot to shoot, and in most cases this will be in the form of a suitcase, because we quite literally have everything in there.
As a stylist, it is our job to be prepared for the worst case scenario at all times.
Got some make up on a garment? We have stain remover
Shoes are dirty? We definitely have tape for those soles
Bad breath? We’ve got gum! We’re kind of like the Marry Poppins of the photoshoot, aware of everything around us and prepared for it all.
Everyone will have their own version of holy grail items, but lets talk through my top 3!
Number 1: Mini Steamer
I will never leave to a shoot without this!
Whilst we like to be prepared and steam items ahead of travelling to a shoot, sometimes things happen and you need touch ups.
The biggest lesson I have learned is to never rely on a studio or any one else for a steamer: if you bring the clothes, that’s your job to make sure they look presentable and ready to shoot at all times!
Number 2: Baby Wipes
Once I began styling, I started using baby wipes for things I never would’ve thought. They are truly a multipurpose lifesaver on a set.
wiping your face, refreshing your underarms, wiping off perfume, getting stains of garments, cleaning the soles of shoes… I can keep on going!
Number 3: Slippers
This one is a bit rogue, but has saved both me and models on many occasions.
If you’ve ever been in a big industrial studio, you know how cold they could get… and if you have ever been on a set, you know wearing shoes on it is a huge no-no.
Grabbing a pair of Kmart slippers to live in my kit has saved me many a time when I need to be jumping on and off set to make adjustments on a shoot, as well as my models between shots. There is truly no worse feeling than having an amazing day on set ruined from being cold!
So when you next see a stylist on set, you best believe that we are stocked up and ready to go for any possible event that could unfold whilst on set!
PS: we usually are the ones that bring the lollies too!
